Silent Thunder

Silent Thunder Silent Thunder Review – Still Working – Allentown, Pa
Could not put the book down. Some characters were not what I would expect from Roy J
I had a good laugh at the reviewer who didn’t buy the idea of a deactivated nuclear sub as a museum exhibit — I’ve been on two such subs in the past few years (the Nautilus in the U.S. and the HMS Courageous in England), so however expensive it may be, it’s definitely possible. I found “Silent Thunder” to be an exciting can’t-put-it-down thriller, and though I would have enjoyed reading more Clancy-esque technical details, I still thought it was a lot of fun. The story is packed full of interesting twists and turns, and the characters are very appealing. I definitely recommend it. :

Marine architect Hannah Bryson has landed the assignment of a lifetime. The U.S. maritime museum has just acquired the former pride of the Soviet fleet, the legendary nuclear attack sub Silent Thunder, for public exhibition. It’s Hannah’s job to inspect every inch of the decommissioned vessel and make sure it’s safe for the thousands of expected visitors. Enlisting the aid of her brother, Connor, they delve into its long and lethal history.

Then, on a routine check, Connor discovers a cryptic message behind one of the ship’s panels. Before he can figure out what it means, there’s a deadly assault on Silent Thunder. Now, although the U.S. government warns her against it, Hannah will stop at nothing to unravel the truth about Silent Thunder. Even if it means coming face to face with the ruthless mastermind behind the plot—and joining forces with a mysterious and seductive mercenary who is willing to kill to make sure the secrets about Silent Thunder stay silent. . . .

Shadow Zone

Shadow Zone Shadow Zone – Corleen Ciha – Minnesota

This is a great series. The characters are wonderful. I love the underwater explorations. Reminds me lot of Clive cussler’s books which are great!!
Hannah Bryson’s task as designer of highly technical submersible submarines used in mapping the underwater ancient city of Marinth becomes a dangerous mission. She works with her long-time friend, scientist Melis Nemid, who has made the mystery of Marinth and its sudden disappearance her lifetime study. National Geographic magazine has photographed their work, producing short documentaries about the undersea marvels they unearth. While trying to determine the reason for the once-thriving city’s demise, Hannah makes a shocking discovery that could have dire consequences for the modern-day world.

Iris Johansen and her son, Roy, weave together a plausible story about intrigue, international plotters, high finance between arms dealers, the CIA, two former Russian operatives from Cold War times, and Hannah Bryson herself. Hannah is fresh from the murder of her cohort and brother, Connor, who had been her best friend and close confidant, and has left behind a 12-year-old son, wife and daughter whom she cherishes. She is now back at sea in an attempt to wipe away her grief by helping Melis and her crew solve the Marinth mystery.

Hannah discovers a brilliant trellis, configured of small pieces of glass that forms a maze of language that only Melis can translate. Artfully driving and diving her submersible, she hooks the trellis behind it to drag it on a heavy sled up to the surface. But an eerie black formation that impedes the progress loudly crashes against the submarine, narrowly close to its destruction. Its force badly damages the vehicle, but Hannah is able to bring the treasure to the water’s surface. Her enemy deep near the sunken city is groups of dolphins, who butt the sub until it nearly shatters to pieces. On top safely, she and Melis can’t understand the unusual behavior of the usually mild-mannered mammals.

In the meantime, Hannah’s former love interest, Kirov, attacks and nearly kills a middle man for an international arms dealer, Gadaire, whose intent is to discover the scientific details of the research at Marinth. A possible link to the death of the ancient city comes from a lethal undersea growth from Marinth’s sea beds. The growth, which could have destroyed the ancient civilization, could now be a possible weapon in modern arms warfare between nations. Gadaire will sell the find to the highest bidder, making him possess the ability to unleash global terror. His lethal girlfriend, Anna Devareau, kills those who stand in his way, but she has plans to subvert him in order to gain control of his vast monetary empire.

Hannah discovers that her expedition is at risk but feels helpless to control the outcome without expert help. Through former KGB officer Eugenia, she contacts Kirov, and the plot becomes murky when strong but dark Kirov brings his findings to them. He’s in the sights of a CIA operative about his handiwork taking out Gadaire’s muscle man. Gadaire has contacted a biological scientist, a professor in Ireland, to experiment with the now-stolen trellis with its treasure from Marinth. Hannah, together with her team, Kirov, Eugenia, Baker from the CIA, and the entire research crew, must retrieve the stolen glass pieces to solve the maze. Melis can then possibly discover a tool to destroy the deadly specimens.

SHADOW ZONE is a quick read and too rapid-fire to put down. Its unique story is well researched but does not bog down with statistics. Hannah Bryson is still the feisty, stubborn heroine who recognizes that she cannot solve the mystery of Marinth without help from her complicated relationship with Kirov. Their interaction is not without trouble, but places two strong characters in unity when results bring help for the future. I highly recommend this latest Johansen venture as an entertaining read and look forward to more from this talented mother/son duo. :

The #1 New York Times bestselling author teams up once again with her Edgar award-winning son to bring us a new heart-pounding thriller involving the search for a mysterious Atlantean city

While mapping the ancient underwater city of Marinth in the Atlantic Ocean, submersible designer Hannah Bryson makes a shocking discovery: she may have finally uncovered the truth about the once-glorious city’s mysterious demise. Long ago it was a thriving metropolis bursting with culture and life—Marinth’s sudden disappearance has plagued scientists for years. But now, with her unexpected new findings, Hannah realizes that the ancient city’s explosive secret could have dire consequences for the modern-day world.
But Hannah isn’t the only one who realizes it. When her key artifact is hijacked en route to a research lab, she is thrust into an adventure in which she must match wits against a terrifying enemy who will kill anyone who stands in his way. And when Hannah becomes his target, she knows that her best hope for survival lies with Kirov, a mysterious and deadly man from her past. Together they will race to unravel Marinth’s last great secret in order to prevent a catastrophe of global proportions. Before the lethal game is over, however, Hannah will realize that no one is above suspicion.

Trikke Tech T12 Series 3-Wheeled Carving Scooter (Charcoal)

Trikke Tech T12 Series 3-Wheeled Carving Scooter (Charcoal) Should have bought a T-8 Air – Matt Larson – Orange County, CA
I’ve owned an old style T-8, with the polyurethane wheels, for almost a year. Though I liked it, it seemed too much like a “toy”, and I wanted something more substantial. Everything that I read (Trikketalk, etc) led me to believe that the T-12 was the “Cadillac” of the Trikke line – smooth, easy, quiet and fast. This is NOT the case – in fact, it is vastly less efficient than my old t-8 (“less efficient” = requiring greater energy expense to cover the same distance). This makes it substantially harder to ride than the t-8. It is just plain exhausting!

I checked to make sure that there wasn’t a problem with my particular T-12. I checked that the bushings were not too tight, OK, that the brakes weren’t rubbing, OK, that I had the recommended 75psi front and 80psi rear, OK – everything checked out fine, so I posted my concerns on Trikketalk. The general thrust of the replies is that the T-12 really is bigger, slower and harder to get going than any Trikke in the line, and I just need to get used to it. So, it is a Cadillac all right, but instead of driving it, it feels like I am behind it, pushing it. Uphill. With it in Park.

On other subjects, it is very well built – there is no flex or shimmy when I am on it, and I am 6′0 – 200 lbs. Putting it together was straightforward – however, you need to carefully study the instructions on brake adjustments if you are going to set them yourself.

The thing that keeps my rating from falling below a 3 is this: the T-12 IS a good workout. I do intend on sticking with it, however, it will stay just that: “A Workout Device”. For fun and riding enjoyment wish I would have bought the T-8 air – which would have been the sweet spot between effort, comfort, ease of use, and speed. Not to mention, less expensive by more than 0.00.

FOLLOW UP -

I have now been riding the T-12 for over a year. I take it out three times a week, 10 miles each ride. I also rotate that same 10 mile path between roller-skates and a bicycle. The T-12 is STILL too big, too bulky, too cumbersome, too arduous, and too hard to move to be anything other than a “Workout Device”. (And this is from someone who is (now) 6′0, 185 lb.) As a “Workout Device”, it is very good, I still have no complaints about it’s build, workmanship or sturdiness. But, because the T-12 is none-the-less limited in it’s role, I find that I still use the T-8 Poly for general riding around. Now, more than a year down the road, I still feel that the T-8 would have been a better choice, one that hits the target of being a multipurpose Trikke – nimble enough to kick around town and heavy enough for working out.

Trikke Tech T8 Series 3-Wheeled Carving Scooter (Black) Trikke T8 Air – Richard Grisoli – New Orleans
Great purchase……give it a few days and you will get it. Watch a few instructional videos on youtube and you’ll be off and trikking. Uphill trikking must be for only “a few good men”. Much better for the hips and knees than running and more fun than being on an eliptical. My best purchase of the year!
